Mid Atlantic States

From Savannah's moss-draped oak trees to the cobblestone streets of Charleston, the South Atlantic states offer a comination of historic charm and laid-back living. Beware: stay at Carolina's pristine beaches for too long, and you'll be tempted to exchange your desk for a hammock and your work pen for a fishing pole.

A Few of My Favorite Drives

Here are a handful of my favorite drives that I've stumbled upon in my travels the past few years. Whether it's driving alongside rugged canyons of southeast Colorado or cruising the beach front along Cape Cod, each drive offers its own unique settings and spectacular views. I hope you can get out and explore some of these beautiful areas. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Great Smoky Mountains

I had originally planned to explore the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in March 2020, but the coronavirus derailed those plans. I tried again in December just as a winter storm blanketed the area in a fresh coat of snow. Even though the Smokies are the most visited national park in the country, I was fortunate to see the breathtaking views with far less traffic in the winter months.

The Berkshires

I’ve been exploring the Berkshires in the western part of Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut. The Mohawk Trail from Greenfield to North Adams was one of those memorable drives I won’t soon forget. Located at the halfway point is the Mohawk Trail State Forest, an old-growth forest that boasts New England’s oldest and tallest trees: A 170-foot white pine and a hemlock estimated around 500 years old.

Gettysburg National Military Park

The skies were grey and overcast, a similar shade to the uniforms worn by the Confederates who arrived at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. I took Honcho on the self-guided auto tour with stops at 16 different locations throughout the battlefield. There were more monuments than could be counted, sent by states from the north and south to memorialize the soldiers who lost their lives during the three-day battle.
